Tritons Garner CCAA Commissioner's Cup

SAN DIEGO (UCSD) - For the third consecutive year, UC San Diego was announced the winner of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Commissioner's Cup for the just-completed 2007-08 athletics season, it was announced on Monday at the CCAA's Executive Council Meetings in Arcata. The Commissioner's Cup is presented in association with Apple Computer with the winning institution to receive a laptop computer along with a glass trophy and is awarded to the CCAA member institution with the highest aggregate ranking in eight (8) of the CCAA's 13 championship sport offerings. UC San Diego totaled 18.5 points to finish ahead of Chico State, which finished second with 20 points.

The 11th-ranked UC San Diego baseball team defeated Nebraska-Kearney 12-5 in NCAA West Region action on Saturday afternoon. The win set up a semifinal showdown with No. 6 Chico State, a game which the Tritons led through the middle innings, but mistakes led to a Wildcat comeback, a 3-2 win over the Tritons. Chico State must now win twice against Sonoma State for the right to go to the College World Series next week. UCSD's season comes to an end with a school record 43 wins (43-18).

SAN DIEGO (UCSD) - The 9th-ranked UC San Diego baseball team will be making its second consecutive NCAA Division II West Region tournament, it was announced late Sunday night. The Tritons are the No. 2 seed in the six-team regional, joining No. 1 Sonoma State, No. 3 Chico State, No. 4 Cal State Stanislaus, No. 5 Western Oregon and No. 6 Nebraska-Kearney. The Tritons will open up play on Thursday, May 15 when it faces Great Northwest Athletic Conference champion Western Oregon. The winner of the six-team regional in Chico, Calif. will advance to the DII Championship finals in Montgomery, Alabama.

Crew Ends Season
UC San Diego men's crew ended its 2007-2008 season with strong performances Sunday during day two of the National Invitational Collegiate Regatta. The Tritons' second varsity eight, after coming in second in its heat, placed sixth overall out of the 18 squads competing. "For us that marked the first time a varsity or junior varsity boat made it into a Grand Final at this regatta," UCSD head coach Zach Johnson.

UCSD Loses in Tournament

SAN DIEGO (UCSD) - The 9th-ranked UC San Diego baseball team suffered its fourth consecutive loss on Friday, losing in extra innings to Cal State Stanislaus 6-5 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association tournament. The Tritons led 4-0 and saw the Warriors rally to take a 5-4 lead. Chris Hom came through with a two-out RBI in a the ninth-inning, tying the game at 5-5. CSUS came through in the bottom half of the 10th-inning with a leadoff single and RBI double to advance to play another game. With the loss UCSD drops to 41-16.

SAN DIEGO (UCSD) - The 9th-ranked UC San Diego baseball team (41-14) makes its fifth consecutive California Collegiate Athletic Association Baseball Tournament appearance this week in Chico, Calif. The last time the Championship was held in Chico was during the 2005 year, a tournament in which the Tritons won by winning four games in 48 hours. The Tritons are seeded No. 2 in the field, along with No. 1 Sonoma State, No. 3 Chico State and No. 4 Cal State Stanislaus. UCSD faced CSUS, CSUC and SSU in conference play, taking 3-of-4 from both the Warriors and Wildcats, while splitting four games with the Seawolves.

SAN DIEGO (UCSD) - The 8th-ranked UC San Diego baseball team split a doubleheader with Cal State Monterey Bay on Saturday afternoon at Triton Baseball Field. UCSD won the first game 11-1 behind Guido Knudson (6-4) pitching eight innings and allowing just one run. The Triton offense recorded 16 hits and homeruns by James Ferguson and Chris Franco. In the second game, CSUMB jumped out to a 7-1 lead en route to an 8-4 win. The Tritons brought the potential tying run to the plate in the sixth inning of the second game but could not capitalize. UCSD is now 41-13, 25-10 California Collegiate Athletic Association, while the Otters are now 16-35, 8-27 CCAA.

Tennis Advances

The No. 23 UC San Diego women's tennis team defeated the visiting No. 32 Cal Poly Pomona Broncos in the first round of the NCAA Division II Women's Tennis Championship on Saturday morning at the Northview Tennis Courts by a 5-0 score. The Tritons improved their record to 14-10 and will play BYU-Hawaii in the second round of the tournament. The Broncos conclude their season with a record of 7-10.

Track & Field Competes

With day two of the CCAA Track and Field Championships in the books the team title picture got clearer. After seven scored events the women sit in second place, 12 points behind Chico State and 34.5 points ahead of third place Cal State L.A. The men have accumulated 34 points through five events and are a mere 3 points behind second place

SAN DIEGO (UCSD) - The UC San Diego men and women track and field squads head up to Los Angeles for the weekend to compete in the CCAA Championship Meet. The meet will be held on the campus of Cal State L.A. at Jesse Owens Track.

The women look for their fourth team championship in a row while the men look to improve on their fifth place finish last season.The women look to be the favorite going in to the championships as they are ranked as the top team in the nation according to the latest NCAA Division II Power Rankings. The women scored 260 points outdistancing second place Chico State by 77.5 points as they claimed their third straight team championship. Sophomore Linda Rainwater will look to improve on her second place finish last season in the heptathlon as well as defend her high jump title from a year ago.

SAN DIEGO (UCSD) - The 8th-ranked UC San Diego baseball team scored three runs in the seventh inning to break open a tie game and defeated 2nd-ranked Sonoma State 7-4 on Friday afternoon at Triton Baseball Field. With the win, UCSD (35-9, 19-6 California Collegiate Athletic Association) moves to within a game of first-place Sonoma State (35-6, 19-4 CCAA). Vance Albitz was one of three Tritons with three hits, adding two RBI. Tim Mort and Evan Kehoe also added three hits apiece. After a strong outing by Kirby St. John, Tim Shibuya (7-0) earned the win while Keith Noe saved his 12th of the year.

Tennis Drops Match
The UC San Diego men's tennis team traveled to face UC Davis on Friday at the Marya Welch Tennis Center. The Tritons played well and nearly pulled out the win against the Division I Aggies but fell in the end 4-3. UCSD dropped to 10-11 on the season while Davis improved to 10-12. In doubles play the Tritons took the No. 1 match when Eric Rubens and Alex Placek defeated Daniel Elefant and Michael Reiser 8-6. However, UCSD lost the No. 2 and No. 3 matches. Thus the Aggies took a 1-0 lead into singles play. The match was played using Division I rules where doubles count as one point

UCSD Women Fall in Semis

SEATTLE (UCSD) - The UC San Diego women's basketball team saw its season come to an end at the NCAA West Region semifinals on Saturday night in Seattle. The Tritons led for the entire first-half, but fell to Seattle Pacific 76-67. The Tritons led by six points at halftime and led 50-40 with 12:08 remaining in the game. SPU outscored the Tritons 36-17 for the remainder of the game to earn a spot in the Region Championship game on Monday against Alaska Anchorage. UCSD's season ends with a 25-10 mark, while SPU improves to 29-0.

SAN DIEGO (UCSD) - No. 11 University of Alaska Anchorage knocked off the UC San Diego men's basketball team, 80-60, in NCAA Division II Tournament action Friday evening. The Tritons ended the season 18-12 overall, their best finish since the 1998-1999 campaign.

With the West Regional quarterfinal game marking UCSD's first appearance in the DII Tournament, sophomore Jordan Lawley led the Tritons with a career-high 24 points. Lawley went for 8-for-13 from the field and a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line. Junior Henry Patterson, leading UCSD in scoring average for the third consecutive season, added 10 points in Friday's tournament.

UCSD Wins Opener, Advances to Semifinals

SEATTLE - The UC San Diego women's basketball team got strong performances all-around as the Tritons defeated Cal State San Bernardino 59-46 in their NCAA West Region quarterfinal on Friday night in Seattle. Meaghan Noud finished with 23 points and Michelle Osier recorded 18 points and 10 rebounds. Alexis Gaskin anchored a defense which held CCAA Player of the Year Vanessa Wilt to just four points. Fellow senior guard Alexis Mezzetta dished out a career-best 10 assists for UCSD."Noud and Osier carried us offensively in the first-half," said head coach Charity Elliott. "Gaskin's post defense was huge in this game, and Mezzetta ran the offense and did a great job of controlling the game."

UCSD Women Going Dancing

On Sunday night, the UC San Diego women's basketball team learned that it will be participating in its third consecutive NCAA Tournament on March 14-17. The Tritons, with a 24-9 record, advanced to the California Collegiate Athletic Association title game and are the defending West Region champs.

UCSD is the No. 4 seed and will face the No. 5 seed in Cal State San Bernardino (19-7) at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. The host school is Seattle Pacific with an undefeated record and the region's No. 1 seed. Rounding out the field includes Chico State, Alaska Anchorage, Sonoma State, Northwest Nazarene and St. Martins.

UCSD Makes D2 Tournament

SAN DIEGO (UCSD) - The NCAA Committee announced the bracket for the Division II Tournament Sunday and awarded the UC San Diego men's basketball team with the No. 8 seed in the West Region. The Tritons will play Friday night against the University of Alaska Anchorage, the regional host.

UCSD clinched a berth in the 64-team field with a win Saturday over Cal Poly Pomona in the California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament championship game. After a 17-point performance in the title game, Triton junior Henry Patterson was crowned the tournament's most valuable player. UCSD is making its first Division II Tournament appearance.

SAN DIEGO (UCSD) - The UC San Diego men's basketball won the California Collegiate Athletic Association title with a 64-56 victory over Cal Poly Pomona Saturday, guaranteeing the Tritons (18-11) a spot in their first NCAA Division II Tournament. Junior Henry Patterson, named the CCAA Tournament Most Valuable Player, carried UCSD with a 17-point performance on 5-for-7 shooting. The Tritons got off to spectacular starts in both halves and led the Broncos through all of the game's final 38 minutes. Four UCSD players scored in double figures, including junior Darryl Lawlor's 11 points.

Women Drop Contest
The UC San Diego women's basketball team (24-9) fell in the California Collegiate Athletic Association championship game to No. 18 Chico State 69-63 on Saturday evening. The Tritons took a five-point halftime lead and led for the majority of the second-half. CSUC did not take the lead until a bucket with 3:01 remaining. Down by three-points, UCSD had a chance to tie but a missed three-pointer with :35 left and the Wildcats converted free-throws to take the win. The Wildcats (27-5) secured the conferences automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament. The Tritons are expected to be part of the eight-team NCAA West Region, which will be announced on Sunday night.

The 6th-ranked UC San Diego baseball team split a doubleheader against Cal State L.A. on Saturday afternoon at Triton Baseball Field. A two-run homerun by Evan Kehoe and a strong pitching performance by a trio of Tritons helped UCSD take game one 2-1. Kirby St. John (3-0) earned the win while Tim Shibuya pitched three shutout innings and Keith Noe earned the save. In game two, two CSULA homeruns gave the Golden Eagles a 6-0 lead and CSULA would cruise to the win. UCSD is now 19-5, 9-2 California Collegiate Athletic Association, while CSULA is 10-13, 5-6 CCAA.

Tritons Split in Water Polo

The 15th-ranked UC San Diego women's water polo team split two games at the Loyola Marymount tournament on Saturday afternoon on the LMU campus. UCSD began the day by outscoring Sonoma State 6-0 in the first-period and cruised to the 11-5 win. Sydney Gstettenbauer, the nation's second-leading goal-scorer, scored three times, while Elizabeth Hahn added two scores. The Tritons were edged by Santa Clara 5-4 in the afternoon game. SCU took a 4-1 lead at halftime, but the Tritons stormed back and cut the deficit to one goal in the third and fourth quarters. UCSD is now 9-12 on the season.

UCSD Moves Into CCA Semi-Finals

SAN DIEGO (UCSD) - After defeating No. 13 Cal State San Bernardino on Tuesday in the opening round of the California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament, the UC San Diego men's basketball team's next challenge comes Friday in a semifinal contest against San Francisco State. Tip-off between the Tritons and Gators is set for 5:30 p.m. at Coussoulis Arena on the campus of tournament host CSUSB.

At 8 p.m. Friday, the other semifinal game between Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal Poly Pomona gets underway. The two winners will play each other in the championship game at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. Women Travel to San Bernardino for Semis
The UC San Diego women's basketball team heads to Cal State San Bernardino for the CCAA Tournament on Friday, March 7. UCSD takes on Sonoma State at 12:30 p.m. in the first semifinal in Coussoulis Arena. The other semifinal will feature Chico State vs. Cal Poly Pomona at 3:00 p.m. The winners will face each other on Saturday, with a tip-off slated for 5:00 p.m. in San Bernardino.

Triton Men Hoops in CCAA Tournament

SAN DIEGO (UCSD) - The UC San Diego men's basketball team hits the road to take on No. 13 Cal State San Bernardino Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in the first round of the California Colllegiate Athletic Assocation. The Tritons hold a 15-11 overall record and an 11-9 mark in CCAA play. Despite having the third-best record in the league, UCSD received the tournament's seventh seed because of tiebreaking procedures based on head-to-head play. Just one win separates seed three through eight. After winning six consecutive games spanning from Jan. 29 to Feb. 15, the Tritons now aim to break out of a five-game skid that stretched the second half of February.

UCSD Women Begin Postseason Tuesday

SAN DIEGO (UCSD) - The UC San Diego women's basketball team enters the postseason this week, beginning with the CCAA Tournament. The Tritons have won six of their last seven games, earning the No. 3 seed in the CCAA Tournament. UCSD hosts San Francisco State on Tuesday, March 4, a team that the Tritons have defeated twice this year. UCSD is also looking to improve on its No. 5 NCAA West Region Ranking (as of 2/27/08). In the latest Regional Poll, Seattle Pacific is No.1, followed by No. 2 Chico State, No. 3 Cal State San Bernardino, No. 4 Alaska Anchorage and the Tritons rounding out the top five. The top eight teams in the region earn NCAA Postseason spots.

SAN DIEGO (UCSD) - After sweeping a rain-shortened series against Cal State Dominguez Hills, the UC San Diego softball team continues CCAA play with doubleheaders Friday and Saturday at Cal State San Bernardino. The Tritons were victorious in both halves of Saturday's doubleheader with the Toros, 4-3 and 5-3. Friday's games have now been rescheduled to start at 1 p.m. on April 18. The two wins this past weekend pushed UCSD's overall record to 14-4 and 4-2 within league play, good for a second place tie with CSUSB in the CCAA.

Baseball Returns to the Field
The 9th-ranked UC San Diego baseball team (13-3, 3-0 California Collegiate Athletic Association) returns to the field this week with a four-game, home-and-home set with Cal Poly Pomona (3-8, 0-2 CCAA). The Tritons 13-3 start is the best start to a season since the 2000 squad went 14-4 to begin the year. The 1994 team began the year 16-2 and 28-3 later in the year. The all-time series between the Broncos and Tritons stands at 14-14. In the last two years, UCSD is 6-2 against the Broncos, winning 3-of-4 each season. The Tritons are hitting at a .321 clip as a team, with an ERA of 4.14.

Volleyball Starts Long Homestand
The UC San Diego men's volleyball team (4-12, 1-10 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) returns home to begin a nine-match homestand this week. The Tritons will host No. 12 UC Santa Barbara (7-8, 5-6 MPSF) on Friday, February 29 and No. 4 Cal State Northridge (12-4, 8-3 MPSF) on Saturday, March 1. Both matches are slated for a 7:00 p.m. start in RIMAC Arena. Last week the Tritons fell to Lewis 30-27, 27-30, 30-25, 30-27 and Loyola Chicago 30-25, 30-26, 29-31, 30-22. Against Lewis, Jason Spangler sent down 25 kills to go along with 12 digs. Tyler Kern added seven kills and a team-high six blocks. Against the Ramblers, Frank Fritsch recorded 15 kills and Spangler added 16.

SAN DIEGO (UCSD) - The UC San Diego men's basketball team put up a valiant effort but came out on the wrong side of a 78-76 decision on Saturday night at Cal Poly Pomona. With the win the Broncos improve to 11-12 overall and 10-8 in CCAA play while the Tritons fall to 15-9 overall and 11-7 in league action. Allard netted a game-high 19 points in the loss for the Tritons while Lawlor added 16 points and a game-high seven rebounds. Andrew Hatch added 12 points and three assists. Head coach Chris Carlson's team remains alone in third place, three games behind Cal State San Bernardino and two behind Humboldt State, both of whom have locked up hosting responsibilities for the first round of the CCAA Championship Tournament that begins on March 4.

Women Lose toPamona
The UC San Diego women's basketball team lost to Cal Poly Pomona for the second time in as many tries this season, this time falling by a 72-55 score on Saturday evening in Kellogg Gymnasium on the CPP campus. With the loss the Tritons drop to 20-8 overall and 12-6 in CCAA play while the Broncos improve to 11-13 overall and 8-10 in conference action.UCSD falls into a tie for third place in the CCAA standings alongside Sonoma State. Both teams trail CCAA leader Chico State by three games and Cal State San Bernardino by two. Both Chico State and CSUSB have secured home court advantage for the first round of the CCAA Tournament while Sonoma State and UCSD will need one win in the final two regular season games next week to host the first round playoff game on Tuesday, March 4.
