Tritons Report

SAN DIEGO (UCSD) - After sweeping a rain-shortened series against Cal State Dominguez Hills, the UC San Diego softball team continues CCAA play with doubleheaders Friday and Saturday at Cal State San Bernardino. The Tritons were victorious in both halves of Saturday's doubleheader with the Toros, 4-3 and 5-3. Friday's games have now been rescheduled to start at 1 p.m. on April 18. The two wins this past weekend pushed UCSD's overall record to 14-4 and 4-2 within league play, good for a second place tie with CSUSB in the CCAA.
Baseball Returns to the Field
The 9th-ranked UC San Diego baseball team (13-3, 3-0 California Collegiate Athletic Association) returns to the field this week with a four-game, home-and-home set with Cal Poly Pomona (3-8, 0-2 CCAA). The Tritons 13-3 start is the best start to a season since the 2000 squad went 14-4 to begin the year. The 1994 team began the year 16-2 and 28-3 later in the year. The all-time series between the Broncos and Tritons stands at 14-14. In the last two years, UCSD is 6-2 against the Broncos, winning 3-of-4 each season. The Tritons are hitting at a .321 clip as a team, with an ERA of 4.14.
Volleyball Starts Long Homestand
The UC San Diego men's volleyball team (4-12, 1-10 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) returns home to begin a nine-match homestand this week. The Tritons will host No. 12 UC Santa Barbara (7-8, 5-6 MPSF) on Friday, February 29 and No. 4 Cal State Northridge (12-4, 8-3 MPSF) on Saturday, March 1. Both matches are slated for a 7:00 p.m. start in RIMAC Arena. Last week the Tritons fell to Lewis 30-27, 27-30, 30-25, 30-27 and Loyola Chicago 30-25, 30-26, 29-31, 30-22. Against Lewis, Jason Spangler sent down 25 kills to go along with 12 digs. Tyler Kern added seven kills and a team-high six blocks. Against the Ramblers, Frank Fritsch recorded 15 kills and Spangler added 16.
