Friars & Jake Peavy Go For Sweep

San Francisco (66-82) at San Diego (80-67), 1:05 pm, 4SD/1090/105.7
SAN DIEGO (Ticker) - Jake Peavy will look to add to his Cy Young resume when the San Diego Padres host the San Francisco Giants on Sunday. Peavy, who leads the National League in all three pitching Triple Crown categories, will likely have the luxury of facing a Giants' lineup that will not include Barry Bonds. The seven-time MVP left Saturday's game early with a strained big toe, and generally skips day games after night games.
The Padres have their work cut out for them if they hope to make the playoffs for a third straight season. San Diego owns a 1 1/2-game lead in the NL wild card race, but both the Philadelphia Phillies (79-69) and the Los Angeles Dodgers (79-69) are hot on their heels, having won three and four games in a row, respectively. Peavy (17-6, 2.44 ERA) will look to lead the Padres to their third straight win on Sunday. The 26-year-old ace has won eight of his last nine decisions. He is 9-6 in 19 career starts against San Francisco with a 3.44 ERA.
The Giants will counter with rookie Tim Lincecum (7-4, 3.99). The 23-year-old righthander has allowed three earned runs or less in nine of his last 10 starts. Lincecum has started once this season against San Diego, allowing four hits in seven scoreless frames on June 25. He did not factor in the decision.
