Padres Take Series From Florida

MIAMI (Ticker) -- Jake Peavy combined with Cla Meredith and Trevor Hoffman on a two-hitter and the San Diego Padres scratched out enough offense to post a 3-1 victory over the Florida Marlins on Sunday in the rubber game of the three-game series.

Peavy (4-1) came back from his first loss of the season with a dominant effort, allowing one hit in seven innings while posting his third straight start with double-digit strikeouts.

The Padres did not have an easy time with Olsen but did enough to put Peavy ahead and that was all the 25-year-old righthander needed.

Jose Cruz Jr. doubled to deep left to score Marcus Giles in the first inning as the Padres took a 1-0 lead. It stayed that way until the fourth when shortstop Khalil Greene scored on a wild pitch by Olsen to make it 2-0.

That was more than enough run support for Peavy, who took a no-hitter into the sixth and finished with 10 strikeouts in seven innings.

Florida finally got to Peavy in the sixth. Hanley Ramirez reached on a throwing error by third baseman Kevin Kouzmanoff and Dan Uggla followed with an RBI triple to center field that sliced away from Mike Cameron and cut San Diego's lead to 2-1.

Peavy struck out Miguel Cabrera and Mike Jacobs to end the threat in the sixth. He hit Josh Willingham to start the seventh but escaped further damage.

Terrmel Sledge added an RBI double in the ninth for San Diego, which has won four of five and opens a four-game series at Atlanta on Monday.
