SAN DIEGO (UCSD) - The UC San Diego men's volleyball team hit at a season-high .349 clip and cruised past Hope International 30-19, 30-15, 30-27 on Wednesday night in Fullerton. The Tritons hit .448 in the first game and hit .458 in game two. Russ Hardy led the Tritons with 13 kills, while Frank Fritsch added 10 kills and Jason Spangler chipped in with nine kills. Gerald Houseman and Phil Bannan recorded kills to close out the narrow game three win. With the win, UCSD improves to 4-7 overall and returns to conference action on Friday, February 8 when it travels to Long Beach State.
#6 Tennis Team Defeats Pt. Loma Nazarene
The 6th-ranked UC San Diego men's tennis team posted a 7-2 victory over cross-town rival Point Loma Nazarene University on Wednesday afternoon on the PLNU campus. With the win the Tritons improve to 2-1 overall while dropping the Sea Lions down to 1-1 in 2008. The Tritons jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after the doubles portion of the match as Blake Meister and Eric Rubens led the way at the top spot on the ladder with their 9-8 win over Jonathan Bowman and Joel Myers. Bijan Moallemi and Kazumi Negishi won at No. 2 by an 8-6 margin while Alex Edstrom and Armaun Emami notched an 8-3 victory in the final doubles match.
Baseball Triumphs Over CS San Marcos
The UC San Diego baseball team recorded 15 hits and four homeruns in a 10-3 triumph over Cal State San Marcos on Wednesday afternoon at Triton Baseball Field. 12 different Tritons recorded hits, including two apiece by Vance Albitz, Garrett Imeson and Nick Burke. Chris Franco, Michael Scharbarth, Burke and Michael Benton all went yard in the game. Derek Barham earned the win, allowing three runs in five innings. Kirby St. John and Eric Abraham held the Cougars to no runs on one hit in four innings of relief. With the win, UCSD improves to 3-2 while CSUSM drops to 3-5.
