Peavy A Lock For Cy Young

(Sports Network) - The Baseball Writers Association of America will continue to dole out their postseason awards on Thursday, when the National League's Cy Young Award winner will be announced. San Diego righty Jake Peavy figures to be a lock after winning pitching's Triple Crown in the NL. He led the league in wins (19), earned run average (2.54) and strikeouts (240) and became the first pitcher to accomplish the feat in the Senior Circuit since Randy Johnson in 2002.

Peavy was the best pitcher in the NL from start to finish. He was 9-3 with a 2.19 ERA in the first half, earning him the start in the All-Star Game in San Francisco. Peavy did not slow up after the break, as he won seven decisions in a row from July 27-September 1 and had a 23-inning scoreless streak during that span.

Should he win, the 26-year-old hurler would become the fourth Padres pitcher to be honored with this award and the first since Mark Davis in 1989. Gaylord Perry (1978) and Randy Jones (1976) also won while with the Friars.
