PGA Grand Slam of Golf Begins Today

TUCKER'S TOWN, Bermuda (Ticker) - The PGA Grand Slam of Golf has a new home but is missing its star attraction. The event starts Tuesday at the Mid-Ocean Club in Bermuda after previously being held at Poipu Bay in Hawaii. The location has shifted from the Pacific to the Atlantic, but the players are all still happy to be at the event.
Tiger Woods has chosen to skip this event for the first time that he has been eligible, leaving three major champions and an alternate in the field. Zach Johnson, Angel Cabrera and Padraig Harrington all won the first majors of their careers this season to earn a spot in the field, while his fourth PGA Championship to run his total of majors to 13. "It means you have to win a major to be here, which is a good thing. It's an added perk. It's kind of a perk on steroids," Johnson said. "In other words the PGA of America pretty much accommodates you in any fashion you need. For the PGA of America to roll out the red carpet for us, it's pretty special. It's a nice way to end the year." "Obviously this is a huge event. To qualify for this event means you've won a major. For all golfers that's what our careers are about," Harrington said. "We're all trying to win a major. Getting here is a big deal, but once you get here, the PGA Grand Slam of Golf is also a big deal. This is an event I've watched on TV over the years. I'm delighted to be here and see what it's all about."
Jim Furyk, winner of the 2003 U.S. Open, is taking Woods place in the field after finishing first on the Major Champions Points List with 214.5 points Furyk tied for 13th at the Masters, tied for second at the U.S. Open, tied for 12th at the British Open Championship and missed the cut at the PGA Championship. Previously, Furyk won the 2003 Grand Slam and was the runner up in 2006.
