Lakers Game in San Diego Cancelled
ANAHEIM, California (Ticker) -- The Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday cancelled their preseason game against the Utah Jazz in San Diego on Thursday due to raging wildfires in the surrounding area. The Lakers defeated the Jazz, 102-81, on Tuesday but will forego a return contest with the club thanks to the prolonged blaze. However, Los Angeles will donate $100,000 to the American Red Cross to help victims of the fire.
"There is simply too much devastation in the area and too much uncertainty about what will happen in the next few days," Lakers senior vice president of business operations Tim Harris said. "After many internal discussions about many different factors, we've concluded that this is simply the right thing to do. "The people of San Diego have been very supportive of us over the years and, in turn, we want to be supportive of them in this time of crisis."
The inferno also has caused Saturday's college football game between San Diego State and Brigham Young to be rescheduled for December 1. The NFL's San Diego Chargers are scheduled to host the Houston Texans on Sunday, but that game also may be in jeopardy. The Chargers currently are practicing at the Arizona Cardinals' facility in suburban Phoenix.
