U.S. Advances to Quarterfinals; Meets England Next

SHANGHAI, China (Ticker) - The United States overcame an industrious Nigeria side to post a 1-0 victory to finish atop Group B and progress to the quarterfinals of the Women's World Cup on Tuesday. With North Korea slumping to 2-1 defeat at the hands of Sweden in the group's other game, the United States finished first with seven points. North Korea still progressed after taking second ahead of Sweden. North Korea finished second due to a better goal differential.

The United States could not take command of the game at the Hongkou Football stadium but for all their possession the African side rarely troubled American goalkeeper Hope Solo. The deciding goal came almost straight from kickoff when a long throw into the Nigeria box was headed on into the path of Lori Chalupny and the midfielder stabbed home from close range. Kristine Lilly was sent through down the left flank just before the half-hour mark but Nigeria recovered well to block the American skipper's run into the box.

But, despite the promising start, chances were few and far between for the United States as the half wore on, with Nigeria enjoying more of the possession without managing to create anything of note in the final third. Another long throw into the box in the 36th minute nearly caused problems for Nigeria but goalkeeper Precious Dede did well to sweep up the danger. Lilly headed wide Chalupny's cross before Abby Wambach saw her goalbound header superbly palmed to safety by Dede just before the break.

Stella Mbachu fired wide for Nigeria at the start of the second half after getting sight of goal following a good passing move. A superb run by Lilian Cole came to nothing as Nigeria strived for an equalize with the United States getting caught out by the quick feet of the Super Falcons' forward line. Lilly sent a long-range rasping shot into the hands of Dede in the 68th minute but again Nigeria attacked as Perpetua Nkwocha powered down the right wing and into the United States' box before dispatching a shot that went just wide of the post. Chalupny's effort from distance was comfortably saved as the game entered the closing stages.

But it was Nigeria who came closest to scoring an equalizer in the 82nd minute when, from a cross, Rita Chikwelu headed an effort goalwards that keeper Solo was only able to deflect back into play before eventually collecting the ball in the ensuing scramble. Dede saved with her legs from a United States effort soon after before Solo was again called upon to deny Nigeria in the last action of the match and ensure the victory.
