Speed, Power & Agility: Essential to Every Sport
by Charles Dimry
Charles Dimry, 12 year NFL veteran, former San Diego Charger and Owner of Velocity Sports Performance in Carlsbad talks about the three essentials to becoming a better athlete.
How important is speed? Far more important than most people realize! The need for speed, power and agility is why my league, the NFL, spends so much time and
money analyzing athletes at its combine each year. At best, a great combine performance can substantially increase an athlete’s draft status and earning
potential. At worst, a poor showing can make or break an athlete’s chances of playing in the league.
The purpose of my example is to show what the NFL has known for years: speed, power
and agility are essential to being great at any sport. Whether you’re sprinting to
first base or sprinting down the football field to catch a pass or break up a play,
SPEED is essential. Whether you’re exploding to the hoop to grab a rebound in a basketball game or above the net to make the block in a volleyball game, POWER is
e s s e n t i a l . Whether you’re making a move to beat a defender on the soccer field or taking someone off the dribble on the basketball court, AGILITY is essential. Speed, power and agility: these attributes make a good player a great athlete.
Some young kids have learned these skills by accident. We call those kids “athletic” and we all notice them on the playing field. When I was a kid, it was thought
that athleticism was simply a matter of good genes and good luck. Today we know differently. Speed, power and agility are skills, and like any skills, can be
taught if you know how. Being the parent of youth athletes myself, I know the
many choices our kids have today. I also know that the increasing competition
in youth sports has left many parents looking for ways to improve their child’s
abilities and thereby improve their selfconfidence and enjoyment of sport.
Kids today have so many choices and many parents are caught racing from a pitching coach to soccer trainers to volleyball hitting lessons. Sports performance
training is unique because it benefits the total athlete and is equally important regardless of the sport you play. Again, speed, power and agility are skills that
are essential to every sport so they should be mastered by every athlete. The following training tip, falling starts, as an excellent drill to improve your speed and overall game.
