Former Teammates Face Off in Atlanta

San Diego (18-15) at Atlanta (20-12) 4:35 pm PT
ATLANTA (Ticker) -- The last time John Smoltz and Greg Maddux faced each other neither were considered future Hall of Famers. The two longtime teammates square off against each other for the first time since 1992 when the Atlanta Braves continue to host the San Diego Padres in the third game of a four-game series on Wednesday.
The duo have combined for five Cy Young Awards and 532 wins since the first time they faced off on May 16, 1990 when Maddux pitched for his original team, the Chicago Cubs. Smoltz won that game, 4-0, and beat Maddux, 4-0, in July of 1992. Overall, the righthander is 2-1 with two shutouts vs. Maddux. Smoltz (4-1, 3.35 ERA) and Maddux (2-2, 3.96) were teammates with the Braves for 11 years and helped them dominate the National League East to the tune of 11 straight division titles and one World Series title in 1995.
The teams split the first two games of the series following the Braves' 3-2 victory on Tuesday. Andruw Jones singled home the go-ahead run with one out in the eighth.
