UNLV Wins Mtn. West

LAS VEGAS (Ticker) -- For the second straight year, UNLV rallied past Brigham Young in the Mountain West Conference championship game. Wink Adams scored 23 points as UNLV stormed back from a double-digit deficit to defeat No. 23 BYU, 76-61, on Saturday. Curtis Terry added 20 points for the Runnin' Rebels (26-7), who held the Cougars to just 32 percent (8-of-25) shooting in the second half. "Awfully proud for our guys," UNLV coach Lon Kruger said. "I thought they just did a great job. I thought BYU had control in the first half. And I thought that flipped and we got control early in the second half."

LAS VEGAS (Ticker) - Despite owning a top-25 ranking and a likely berth to the NCAA Tournament, No. 23 Brigham Young till has to take care of some unfinished business. BYU goes for its first Mountain West Conference title since 2001 on Saturday when it takes on Nevada-Las Vegas in the tournament championship game.

The Cougars (27-6) are making their second straight final appearence and fourth in the nine-year history of the tournament. Last season, the Cougars suffered a 78-70 loss to UNLV here in the title game. Top-seeded BYU booked its place in the final by posting a 63-54 victory over fourth-seeded San Diego State in the semifinals on Friday. Lee Cummard scored 20 points and Trent Plaisted added 19 to lead the Cougars.

UNLV (25-7) advanced to its second straight final on Friday, forging a 61-55 victory over the No. 6 seed Utah. Wink Adams and Curtis Terry each scored 20 points as the Rebels over came 39 percent shooting from the field by forcing 10 turnovers. With the win, the No. 2 seed UNLV is poised to become the first team in Mountain West history to win three conference titles.

MWC Title Could Be BYU's

Wyoming (12-16) at No. 24 BYU (23-6), 7:00 pm

PROVO, Utah (Ticker) -- The march toward the Mountain West Conference regular-season title continues Wednesday for No. 24 Brigham Young. The first-place Cougars (23-6, 12-2) play their final home game of the season against Wyoming (12-16, 5-10).

BYU has won 11 of its last 12 games overall and 46 consecutive games at home. The Cougars have won two straight, including Saturday's 76-57 victory over Air Force. BYU has won six consecutive games in the series and 12 of the last 13 meetings, including a 73-63 road win over the Cowboys on February 2. Junior center-forward Trent Plaisted leads the Cougars at 15.9 points and 8.0 rebounds per game. Junior guard Lee Cummard and sophomore forward Jonathan Tavernari also are in double figures at 15.9 and 13 points per game.

Wyoming has rebounded from a three-game losing streak to win two straight, including a 72-64 win over Utah in its final home game. Junior guard Brandon Ewing averages 15.9 points and senior guard Brad Jones 12.4 for Wyoming.

MWC Football Roundup

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (MWC) - No. 23 BYU claimed its second straight Mountain West Conference football title with a 17-10 win over in-state rival Utah on Saturday. In other league tilts yesterday, New Mexico topped UNLV (27-6) and TCU defeated San Diego State (45-33). On Friday, Colorado State closed out its season with a 36-28 win over Wyoming.

Trailing 10-9 late in the game, the Cougars (9-2, 7-0 MWC) scored on a 14-yard touchdown run and two-point conversion to make the score 17-10 with 38 seconds left to play. The Utes received the ensuing kick but ran out of time as BYU (9-2, -7-0 MWC) became the second team since Utah in 2003 and 2004 to capture back-to-back Mountain West titles outright. The Cougars have now won 15 consecutuve games over MWC opponents and eight straight overall.

Colorado State (3-9, 2-6 MWC) won consecutive games for the first time this season with its Friday-night victory over Wyoming (5-7, 2-6 MWC). The Rams have now won six straight Border War meetings over the Cowboys in Fort Collins. CSU finishes the season on a two-game win streak while Wyoming closes out the year having lost four in a row.

On Saturday, New Mexico (8-4, 5-3 MWC) defeated UNLV (2-10, 1-7 MWC) in Albuquerque to reach the eight-win mark for just the fourth time since 1965 and the second time in 10 seasons under coach Rocky Long. It marks the ninth eight-win season in the Lobos' 109-year history. The Rebels end the 2007 campaign on an eight-game slide.

TCU (7-5, 4-4 MWC) rolled up 694 yards of total offense while tying an NCAA record with 111 plays in its win over San Diego State (4-7, 3-4 MWC). With the victory, the Horned Frogs clinched their eighth winning campaign in 10 seasons.

BYU and San Diego State will wrap up regular-season action on Saturday, Decmeber 1 at Qualcomm Stadium. The game, originally scheduled to take place October 27, was postponed due to the wildfires in the San Diego area.
