Broncos to Release Lynch

DENVER (Ticker) -- Denver Broncos safety John Lynch may have taken part in his final practice with the team, according to a published report on Wednesday. The Rocky Mountain News reported the Broncos have given Lynch permission to explore other options - both inside and outside of football - and will announce his release from the team Thursday.

Lynch's hometown San Diego Chargers are considered a likely landing spot since they showed some interest in the 15-year veteran in free agency before he decided to remain with Denver. He has also drawn interest from television networks - likely as an analyst - once his playing career is over.

Lynch was excused from practice Wednesday morning for what head coach Mike Shanahan called "personal reasons" after the two-time All-Pro did not attend a team meeting Tuesday night as he wrestled with his role in the Broncos' defense. The nine-time Pro Bowl selection signed a one-year, $2 million dollar contract in the offseason with the promise he would be "allowed to compete in every situation."

However, he has seen no time in the Broncos' nickel and dime defenses, only taking part in the team's base package early in training camp. The 36-year-old Lynch has compiled 740 tackles and 26 interceptions in 224 games with the Broncos and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he spent his first 11 seasons.
