Mariners Continue Padres Woes

SAN DIEGO (Ticker) -- Carlos Silva pitched seven solid innings and Adrian Beltre drove in three runs to lead the Seattle Mariners to a 4-2 win over the reeling San Diego Padres on Saturday. Silva (4-9) allowed two runs over seven innings to pick up his first victory in over two months and snap a stretch of nine consecutive losing decisions.

After signing as a free agent with the Mariners in the offseason, the 29-year-old Silva won his first three decisions for his new team before falling into the losing skid. He yielded eight hits while striking out three and not walking a batter. Arthur Rhodes worked around a single to contribute a scoreless eighth. Brandon Morrow allowed a one-out single in the ninth but recovered to convert his fourth save in as many chances this season.

Tony Clark's two-run, pinch-hit single in the seventh was the lone highlight for the Padres, who dropped their season-high seventh straight game. Beltre and Jeremy Reed used back-to-back doubles in the fourth to build a 2-0 lead against San Diego starter Cha Seung Baek. Seattle padded the advantage in the sixth with an RBI single by Beltre that chased Baek, and Reed's sacrifice fly gave the Mariners a 4-0 advantage.

Baek (1-4), who came to the Padres in a trade with the Mariners earlier this season, surrendered four runs on eight hits over five innings against his former team. He struck out five and walked one. Khalil Greene had two hits and scored a run for the Padres, who have lost all six of their interleague series this season.
