LA Angels (22-14) at Tampa Bay (18-16), 4:10 pm
ST. PETERSBURG, Florida (Ticker) - James Shields seeks to bounce back from his worst outing of the season on Friday as the Tampa Bay Rays host the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.
Shields (3-2, 3.80 ERA) was blasted for seven runs and 10 hits in 3 2/3 innings of a 12-4 loss to Boston on Saturday. Prior to that outing, the Rays' ace tossed a two-hitter against Boston in a 3-0 win on April 27. Tampa Bay finished off a nine-game road trip at 4-5 with an 8-3, 13-inning victory over Toronto on Thursday.
Dioner Navarro capped a five-run 13th with his second career grand slam as the Rays overcame Troy Percival's first blown save of the season. Percival, who came out retirement this season, started the year 7-for-7 in save opportunities and hadn't allowed a run in 11 innings prior to the blowup. It will be a reunion for the 38-year-old Percival, who is the Angels' all-time saves leader and helped them to a World Series title in 2002.
Anaheim, which had its four-game winning streak snapped in a 9-4 loss to Kansas City on Thursday, will send Jon Garland to the hill. Garland (4-3, 5.08) allowed just one run and three hits in eight innings of a 3-1 win over Baltimore on Saturday.
