Peavy Headed to DL

SAN DIEGO (Ticker) -- San Diego Padres ace Jake Peavy is headed to the 15-day disabled list after an MRI on Monday revealed he has a strained flexor muscle in his right arm.

"(Peavy's) got some edema and a strained muscles in his flexor tendon," manager Bud Black said after the Padres dropped an 8-2 decision to the St. Louis Cardinals. "The ligament looks fine, so that's good. He's going to go on the disabled list. Hopefully in two weeks, the edema of the joint will subside and the swelling will subside and he'll be able to resume throwing."

Peavy told the San Diego Union-Tribune on Sunday that he hasn't felt like himself lately. "It's not normal soreness, which is why we're going to have it looked at," Peavy told newspaper. "It's been about for three or four starts that I've felt a little something. "I do feel something in the elbow. It's better to be safe rather than sorry and have it checked out." Peavy told the newspaper that he feels the discomfort on every pitch and has not been pain-free since a start against Arizona on April 27.

"You always fear the worst, and in this case, it wasn't," Black said. "It will be at least two weeks, and I don't know what the other end of the timetable is. He'll be ready when he's ready, so we're not going to put a number of days on this thing. "He's feeling better already. Structurally, he's fine. It's probably a cumulative thing. It has caught up to Jake over the last three or four starts."

The reigning National League Cy Young Award winner, Peavy had his worst outing of the season at Chicago on Wednesday, allowing four runs and seven hits in four frames. The loss dropped Peavy's season mark to 4-3. He has suffered the defeat in three of his last four decisions and seen his ERA climb from 1.20 on April 17 to its current 2.91.
