Padres Acquire Pitcher


SAN DIEGO (Ticker) -- The San Diego Padres acquired righthanded reliever Brian Corey from the Boston Red Sox on Sunday for a player to be named later or cash considerations. Corey, who was optioned to Class AAA Pawtucket on April 30, posted a 10.50 ERA in seven games with the Red Sox. Corey, 34, is 3-1 with a 4.40 ERA in parts of five seasons with the Arizona Diamondbacks, Texas Rangers, Los Angeles Dodgers and the Red Sox. To make room for Corey, the Padres optioned lefthander Joe Thatcher to Class AAA Portland. Thatcher went 0-4 with a 6.75 ERA in 16 relief appearances.
