Padres On Deck @ D'Backs, Game 1 of 3
San Diego (8-8) at Arizona (11-4), 6:40 pm, 4SD/1090/105.7
PHOENIX (Ticker) - The San Diego Padres are in desperate need of a boost. After playing the longest game in franchise history, the Padres open a three-game series against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday.
San Diego suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 loss in 22 innings to the Colorado Rockies on Thursday, wasting a dominating performance by starter Jake Peavy. Peavy pitched eight scoreless innings against the Rockies, surrendering just four hits and three walks while striking out 11. It was the fourth consecutive strong outing for the reigning National League Cy Young winner, who has 27 strikeouts in 30 innings while allowing just four earned runs this season.
The Padres hope veteran Greg Maddux (2-0, 2.00 ERA) can give a similar performance on Friday after they used seven pitchers on Thursday. Maddux, whose start was moved up after probable starter Chris Young was pushed back a day due to tightness in his right elbow, pitched five scoreless innings and allowed just two hits to lead San Diego to a 1-0 victory against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday.
Righthander Dan Haren (2-0, 2.50) toes the rubber for Arizona seeking his third straight win after allowing just two earned runs while striking out 12 in 12 innings over his last two starts.
