PEORIA, Arizona (Ticker) -- Brett Tomko threw four strong innings and Esteban German had a two-run double as the Kansas City Royals defeated the San Diego Padres, 8-4, in a Cactus League contest on Tuesday. German's double highlighted Kansas City's five-run sixth inning. Damon Hollins also had an RBI single in the frame and Justin Huber broke open the game with a two-run double in the eighth.

Tomko is on the bubble for a spot in Kansas City's rotation, and he helped himself by allowing one earned run and five hits in four innings with no walks and three strikeouts. Chin-hui Tsao and Ron Mahay each tossed a scoreless inning in relief for the Royals. Kevin Kouzmanoff had an RBI triple and Michael Barrett had three hits, including two doubles, for the Padres.
