PEORIA, Arizona (Ticker) -- Greg Maddux pitched four innings but a critical error by the San Diego Padres in the first led to a six-run frame en route to a 7-3 loss to the Chicago Cubs.

A four-time Cy Young winner, Maddux surrendered seven runs - only two earned - on seven hits and two walks with four strikeouts. Cubs starter Jason Marquis yielded three runs and four hits with five strikeouts over 4 1/3 innings.

Adrian Gonzalez blasted a three-run shot in the first inning for the Padres, who were struck out 12 times. Chicago picked up the win despite another sub-par outing from Derek Lee, whose hitless game lowered his spring batting average to .173.
