Padres Agree to Terms with Clark

SAN DIEGO (Ticker) -- The San Diego Padres agreed to terms with first baseman Tony Clark on a one-year contract worth about $900,000, according to a published report on Sunday. According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, Clark originally expected to be back for his fourth season with the Arizona Diamondbacks. But negotiations with the team unexpectedly broke down, leaving the 35-year-old Clark available for the Padres.

The switch-hitting Clark will be expected to back up Padres first baseman Adrian Gonzalez and serve as a pinch hitter, especially against righthanded pitching. The 6-7, 245-pound Clark batted .249 with 17 home runs for the Diamondbacks last season. A 13-year veteran, Clark is a career .265 hitter with 244 homers and 789 RBI with the Detroit Tigers, Boston Red Sox, New York Mets, New York Yankees and Diamondbacks.
