Chargers Sign LB Smith

SAN DIEGO (Ticker) -- The San Diego Chargers and linebacker Derek Smith agreed to terms on a two-year contract Sunday. Financial terms were not disclosed. Smith, 33, who spent the last seven seasons with San Francisco, was released on Tuesday by the 49ers.

In San Diego, Smith will rejoin Chargers coach Norv Turner, who was in charge of the Washington Redskins when Smith was drafted by the team in the third round of the 1997 draft. Smith posted 78 tackles and one interception in 15 games with San Francisco last season. Over his 11-year NFL career with the Redskins and Niners, the 6-2, 240-pound Smith has collected 1,087 tackles, 13 1/2 sacks and four interceptions in 168 games.
