Memphis Is New Number 1

MCLEAN, Virginia (Ticker) -- Memphis is the new No. 1 team in the latest USA Today/ESPN coaches' poll released Monday. Memphis ascended from second to the top spot after then-No. 1 North Carolina endured a shocking 82-80 home loss to Maryland on Saturday.

One of two remaining unbeaten teams along with Kansas, Memphis (17-0) picked up 21 first-place votes and 765 points overall. Kansas (18-0) garnered the other 10 first-place votes and is second with 754 points. Up two spots to third is Duke (15-1), which rolled to a pair of double-digit wins last week.

North Carolina (18-1) fell three spots to fourth and is followed by Tennessee (16-1). Washington State (16-1) is sixth, followed by UCLA (16-2), Indiana (16-1), Georgetown (14-2) and Michigan State (16-2). The next five are Wisconsin (15-2), Texas (14-3), Vanderbilt (17-2), Butler and Mississippi (15-2).

Texas A&M (15-3), which lost twice last week, fell seven spots to 16th. The Aggies are followed by Pittsburgh (15-3), Villanova (13-3), Dayton (14-2) and Marquette (13-4). Rounding out the poll are Stanford (15-3), Xavier (15-4), Drake (16-1), Saint Mary's (15-2) and Clemson (14-2). Stanford, Drake and Saint Mary's are all new to the rankings. Rhode Island, Miami and Arizona State fell out of the poll.
