Toreros Set to Open Classic


SAN DIEGO (USD) - The University of San Diego women's basketball team (7-4) will open play in the Maggie Dixon Surf 'N Slam Classic on Friday against Appalachian State University in a 6 p.m. game inside the friendly confines of the Jenny Craig Pavilion. USD will then conclude play in the tournament on Sunday against either Texas or DePaul. If USD wins on Friday, they will play on Sunday at 8 p.m. and if they lose on Friday, then will play at 6 p.m. on Sunday.

Appalachian State enters the game with an overall record of 2-8 after splitting a pair of games this past week, picking up a 87-81 win over UCF, before dropping a 66-62 decision to La Salle in the championship game of the UCF Tournament. This will be the first meeting between the two programs in program history, and they have had no common opponents thus far in the season. ASU is led by Whitney Tossie, who has a team-best 11.3 points per game average and is the team's second leading rebounder with a 4.0 rebounds per game average.
