Beuerlein Was Kidding With "USC Thug" Remark
NEW YORK (Ticker) - Television analyst and former NFL quarterback Steve Beuerlein was kidding when he referred to Tennessee Titans running back LenDale White as a "USC thug" during Sunday's telecast, according to a CBS spokesperson. White was flagged for a personal foul after he kneed a Cincinnati Bengals player near the end of the first half of Tennessee's 35-6 loss. When the telecast resumed after a commercial break, Beuerlein was heard saying, "USC thugs, man," as cameras showed White - a former Southern California player - sitting on the bench. LeslieAnn Wade, vice president of communications for CBS, told the Tennessean on Monday that Beuerlein was joking off-air with play-by-play man Bill Macatee and was unaware the telecast had resumed. Wade said Macatee lives in California and follows USC football while Beuerlein is a graduate of Notre Dame - a traditional rival of the Trojans. "Steve being a Notre Dame guy and like any two friends who have those allegiances would do, they kid each other about Notre Dame and USC all the time," Wade said. "Certainly Steve wishes it wasn't on the air and so does CBS, but that is the explanation."
