Top 25 Changes After Upsets


MCLEAN, Virginia (Ticker) -- Thanks to a bevy of upsets, the latest USA Today coaches' poll that was released Sunday had a vastly different look. California, Ohio State and Wisconsin all entered the top five in the latest rankings. Gone from the first five are defending national champion Florida, Oklahoma and West Virginia. Florida, Oklahoma and West Virginia all were upset this past weekend. A total of five teams that were ranked in the top 10 were knocked off.

After an impressive 31-24 Pac-10 Conference road win at then-No. 12 Oregon, California (5-0) moved up three spots in the poll to third. Ohio State (5-0) rose four spots to fourth. Fellow Big Ten Conference member Wisconsin (5-0) rose four spots to fifth. The top-two teams in the nation, Southern California (4-0) and Louisiana State (5-0) avoided upsets. USC garnered 45 first-place votes and 1,483 points. LSU (5-0) picked up 14 first-place votes and 1,454 points. Up five spots to sixth is Boston College (5-0), which was unimpressive in a 24-14 win over Massachusetts. After enduring a 20-17 home loss to Auburn, Florida (4-1) fell four spots to seventh. Continuing its climb, Kentucky (5-0) jumped seven spots to eighth. Another team ascending is South Florida (4-0), which rose nine spots to ninth following its 21-13 win over then-No. 5 West Virginia.

After suffering a stunning 27-24 loss at Colorado, Oklahoma (4-1) fell six spots from fourth to 10th. Georgia (4-1) is 11th, followed by West Virginia (4-1), Oregon (4-1), Virginia Tech (4-1) and Hawaii (5-0). Texas (4-1), which was beaten at home by Kansas State, fell nine spots to 16th. Missouri (4-0) is 17th, followed by South Carolina (4-1), Arizona State (5-0) and Purdue (5-0).

Down 11 spots to 21st following a home loss to Maryland is Rutgers (3-1). Clemson (4-1) is 22nd, followed by Nebraska (4-1), Cincinnati (5-0) and UCLA (4-1). Cincinnati and UCLA are new to the poll. Penn State, Michigan State and Alabama fell out of the poll.
