Barrett Acquired by Padres in Trade with Cubs

SAN DIEGO (Ticker) -- Michael Barrett apparently will not get another chance to receive pitches - or punches - from Chicago Cubs ace Carlos Zambrano. The Cubs on Wednesday traded Barrett to the San Diego Padres for fellow catcher Rob Bowen and a minor leaguer, according to a report on the San Diego Union-Tribune's web site. Barrett, 30, is batting .256 with nine home runs and 29 RBI this season. The veteran backstop made headlines for the wrong reasons June 1 when he and Zambrano visibly shoved each other in the dugout during a loss to the Atlanta Braves. The scuffle also spilled over into the clubhouse, where the fiery Zambrano punched Barrett, sending the catcher to the hospital for stitches to his lip. In parts of 10 seasons with the Cubs and the Montreal Expos, Barrett owns a .267 career average with 95 homers and 401 RBI. Bowen, 26, is batting .268 with two homers and 11 RBI in 30 games this season for the Padres. According to the report, San Diego also received Class A outfielder Kyler Burke and cash considerations in the deal.
