U.S. Names Team For England Match
CHICAGO (Ticker) -- United States coach Bob Bradley on Tuesday announced the roster for the club's friendly against England on May 28. The U.S. will be playing its first contest against England on British soil since dropping a 2-0 decision on September 7, 1994.
The game, to be played at Wembley Stadium, will be the Americans' second trip to London. "We're excited about the challenge of playing England in Wembley Stadium," Bradley said. "We expect that this is going to be a fantastic experience.
Overall, we look forward to a good week of training and continuing the process of preparing for the task of qualifying for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa." The United States' 22-man roster will be led by Landon Donovan, who will earn his 100th cap with the game against England. At 26 years old, Donovan will become the youngest American to reach 100 caps and the fourth-youngest player to reach that many international appearances.
Other notable players on the American roster will be goalkeeper Tim Howard of Everton FC, defender Carlos Bocanegra and forward Clint Dempsey of Fulham, and midfielder Eddie Lewis of Derby.
The British squad will feature midfielder David Beckham - a teammate of Donovan's with the Los Angeles Galaxy - and forward Wayne Rooney of the English Premier League champions club Manchester United. Chelsea midfielders Joe Cole and Frank Lampard are also among the 31-man roster for England.
Team USA will also play at Spain on June 4 before returning home to take on Argentina in New Jersey on June 8.
