Two Football Players Earn Honors
Seniors Eric Bakhtiari and Hutch Parker were both recognized by the Pioneer Football League Monday as PFL Players of the Week. Both players turned in outstanding efforts in the team's 27-14 victory at Morehead State that sealed a share of the PFL championship with Dayton. Bakhtiari, a senior defensive end from Burlingame, California, finished with six tackles (5 solo), including three quarterback sacks (-18 yards) and four tackles for loss (-27 yards). Bakhtiari, a Buck Buchanan Award candidate, leads all FCS players this season in pass sacks with 18.5. Parker earned his second straight, and third honor this season, for special teams. He knocked in field goals of 35 and 43 yards - the 43 yarder equaling his career-best, and also converted all three PATs. He is now 56-for-56 in PATs this season. The Toreros play their final game of the season this coming Saturday at UC Davis (1:05 pm).
Women's Soccer Moves Into Top 10
The University of San Diego women's soccer team has cracked into the top-10 for the first time in program history, as they check in at No.9 in the latest Soccerbuzz top-30 poll. San Diego is also up five spots in the latest Soccer America top-25 poll to No. 12, and remained at No. 12 in the Soccer Times top-25 poll. The Toreros also held steady at No. 17 in the final NSCAA top-25 poll.This past week, the Toreros concluded their season with 3-0 win over the University of San Francisco. In the match, junior forward Amy Epsten tallied the first two USD goals, to push her career total to 30, breaking an 11-year old record held by Michele Kennedy (1993-96). Senior Vanessa Vella scored the final USD goal on a penalty kick situation. With the win, the Torero moved their season record to 15-2-3 and took sole possession of second place in conference with a 5-1-1 record.
Men's Hoops Team Improves to 2-0
The USD Toreros improved to 2-0 with tonight's 87-76 win over visiting Cal State University Monterey Bay at the Jenny Craig Pavilion. San Diego will put their 2-0 record on the line this Saturday when they host the UNLV Running Rebels in a 6 pm contest at the JCP. Junior forward Ray Murdock scored a career-high 19 points as he made 7-of-9 shots from the field and 4-of-5 from beyond the three-point arc. Four other Toreros reached double digit scoring, including guard Brandon Johnson and forward Chris Lewis, each with 16 points. The Toreros shot 57.4% from the field for the game and out-rebounded the Otters, 38-28.
